What is Low Level Laser Therapy?
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also known as cold laser therapy, is the application of laser light to treat a variety of soft tissue injuries, arthritis and degenerative diseases in horses.
LLLT is both a painless and non-invasive form of surgery.
How does Low Level Laser Therapy work?
When healthy cells communicate and interact, photons, or light particles, are released. The laser replicates this low level release of photons and introduces the simulated release of light particles. This process alters cellular function, promotes circulation and improves the overall health of injured cells and their ability to repair themselves.
LLLT speeds up the healing process after injury by relieving pain, reducing inflammation and improving the quality and strength of damaged tissue. It has also been shown to improve various types of scar tissue and non-healing wounds by stimulating collagen production.
What is Low Level Laser Therapy used for?
The doctors at Mid-Rivers Equine Centre routinely use low lever laser therapy after surgeries to speed up the healing process. LLLT has proved beneficial in treating lesions, neutralizing infections and neuromas.
Low level laser therapy can also be used to treat: bursitis, soreness, edema, abscesses, bone spurs, burns, bone chips, hematomas and more.
