Mid-Rivers Equine Centre attended the 2014 Illinois Horse Fair from March 7th-9th with our mobile clinic. The fair held demonstrations on everything from barrel racing to responsible disease prevention. In addition to holding our own demonstrations, Mid-Rivers offered a variety of fun and educational opportunities to fair attendees.
Mobile Hospital Converts into Mobile Science Center
Rather than perform our usual mobile hospital practices, we converted the unit into a mini-museum. Visitors could educate themselves at their own pace while enjoying complimentary hot chocolate and cookies. Our mobile science center was filled with a wide range of interesting objects, including:
- Horse fetuses
- Bones
- Enteroliths
Informative posters also accompanied these objects, and experts were available to take any additional questions from guests.
Peanut Makes His First Public Debut
Mid-Rivers recently acquired a miniature horse named Peanut, who made his first debut at the Illinois Horse Fair. This adorable creature had never worked a day in his life, but we fitted him into an extra-large dog backpack filled with goodies and showcased him up and down the fair. Peanut met with fair attendees and had quite the photo shoot with new fans. Considering he had been recently gelded, Peanut behaved remarkably well and was an instant hit.
Dr. Hartman Gives Live Demonstrations
The attending veterinarian, Dr. Richard Hartman, performed live demonstrations on colic and lameness. However, Dr. Hartman’s most impressive demonstration used a dynamic endoscope with our horse, Chance. Once inserted, we brought Chance around the fair to show visitors the endoscope at work first-hand. Guests had the opportunity toview the inside of Chance’s upper airway on the exercise endoscope’s screen.
