If you’ve ever considered purchasing an Off The Tract Thoroughbred (OTTB) special diet considerations need to be taken into account. Most race horses’ diets include upwards of 15-18 pounds of grain a day. This is a diet high in carbohydrates which produces the energy the racehorse needs for its high intensity workouts.
As race horses transition into moderate or low-level work their nutritional needs change. This typically means changing an OTTB’s diet from 50% grain to a high forage diet with added fat and protein. Making this transition can be tricky. We recommend working with your veterinarian to help you put a nutrition plan in place before bringing your OTTB home so there can be a smooth and healthy diet transition.
