Dr. Dawn Mrad grew up in the city of St. Louis. She graduated from Drury College in 1989 with a BA in Chemistry. She attended the University of Missouri’s School of Veterinary Medicine where she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1994. She worked in an Illinois mixed animal practice for one year prior to her acceptance in an equine internal medicine residency at the University of Missouri. She completed the three-year residency just prior to joining the Mid-Rivers Equine Centre in 1998 as an Associate Veterinarian.
Dr. Mrad is a general equine practitioner but she has a soft spot for foals and sick patients with infectious diseases. The intensive care and isolation stalls are where she spends a great deal of her time as her patients often have very intense medical needs. Her attention to the details of caring for very sick horses is her passion and our patients are the beneficiaries of her special training, skills and dedication.
Dr. Mrad also has developed an intense interest in the field of forensic veterinary medicine. She has been deeply involved with the justice system on cases involving the mistreatment and/or abuse of horses. She has traveled and testified across the state as an expert witness and as an advocate for these horses on behalf of the Humane Society of Missouri.
Dr. Mrad is on staff at the Hickey College Veterinary Technical Institute. She has been involved with the program since 2009 and loves teaching young people.† She particularly loves math and has graciously tutored many of the staff’s kids.
Dr. Mrad still owns her childhood horse, a 30+ year old Arabian Bob, who still resides with her parents in Springfield Missouri. While she doesn’t have any horses currently living with her, she does have two spunky little terriers, Mozzie (a Cairn) and Bizzie (a Scottie), that keep her entertained to say the least. She enjoys running marathons and has completed many well known events including the New York Marathon.
