Each year Mid-Rivers Equine Centre selects a hand full of pre-vet students to shadow at the equine hospital for a week. This week we are pleased to have Caroline Cavallo. She is a pre-vet student at the University of Illinois where she hopes to earn her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.
Caroline has been riding horses since she was just 4 years old. Most recently you may have seen her competing in the AQHA circuit in the amateur all-around events with her horse RR Making It Happen. Prior to competing in AQHA she showed Hunter Jumpers.
While at the hospital Caroline is spending her days in rounds, on farm calls, and in surgeries. Today she was included in a surgery to remove a bone fragment from a horse’s knee. She was able to scrub up and assist in the x-raying process which ensured that the bone fragment was successfully removed.
Mid-Rivers’ shadowing program is intended to give students an opportunity to experience an equine hospital practice as they look towards a career in veterinary medicine. Applications for shadowing are accepted February 1st РApril 1st and are completed on line. Equine Shadowing Application. Actual shadowing takes place from May-August.
